Laurelhill Pupils get a taste of French Cuisine

Years 11 and 12 GCSE language students from Laurelhill Community College were treated to an astounding culinary experience in a recent educational visit to Manor Park French Restaurant in Armagh. The pupils revelled at the gastronomical delights prepared for them in celebrations of the annual European Day of Languages. The pupils practised their oral skills as well as tasting traditional French cuisine. The exciting menu included frog’s legs, snails and rabbit. Year 11 pupil, Simon Walker praised the intriguing menu and said that as a result he would definitely become more adventurous when it came to sampling foreign cuisine. Both pupils and teachers had a lovely time and found the experience very valuable. The College aims to provide its pupils with educational and stimulating excursions to compliment its curriculum.

Lisburn Junior Sports Personality of the Year

Laurelhill Community College pupil Ross Lightbody has been bee awarded Sports Personality of the Year in the Draynes Farms, Lisburn Junior Sports Personality of the Year awards.  Ross has astounded crowds with his badminton skills and is set to be a sports star to watch in the future.  Awards were presented at a Gala Dinner in the Island Civic Centre in Lisburn on Friday 17 October.   At the tender age of 11, Ross has already been crowned Under 13 Irish Badminton Champion, Under 13 Ulster Badminton Champion and Under 11 European Champion.  The College is proud of his achievements and wishes him every success in future events.

Year 8 Karate Championship

Year 8 pupil Craig Ryan is limbering up this Halloween to compete against 12 and 13 year olds in the European Championships of Karate Wado Kai being held in Bucharest.  Craig hopes that this competition will allow him to move up to the next age group.  Dedicated Craig dominates the world of Karate in the 11 year old category and at present, Craig has amassed an astounding array of titles, including; Northern Ireland Champion(four times in a row), Commonwealth Champion, Canadian World Champion and Scottish Open Champion (all in the 11 year old category).  Craig is confident that he will perform well in the upcoming event.  He hopes that one day the sport will be officially entered into the Olympics and that he will pick up a gold medal for the sport.  The College is incredibly proud of his achievements and a spokesperson for the College said, “What Craig has achieved at the tender age of eleven is astonishing.  He must be commended for his continued commitment to Karate and his academic studies.  We wish him luck in the upcoming championships in Bucharest.”

Laurelhill Netball Stars

Young Netball stars, Laurelhill Community College pupils Natalie Watson and Amy Hull have been recently selected to represent the South Eastern Education and Library Board in the “Podium 4 Sport” Netball Tournament which is to be held on Saturday 8th November in the University of Jordanstown.  Both girls are presently attending training sessions on a weekly basis. Natalie has also been selected to play for the Under 15 Regional Development Squad. Both Natalie and Amy’s dedication and passion for Netball have been praised by the P.E Department in Laurelhill Community College.

Laurehill Celebrates European Day of Languages

Laurelhill Community College celebrated the European Day of Languages on Friday 26th September. Following a week of linguistic celebrations within the Modern Languages Department, prizes were awarded for several competitions within the Junior College. Year 8 pupils enthusiastically created bookmarks to celebrate the day. Year 9 pupils designed colourful multilingual banners welcoming pupils to the College. Year 10 pupils designed inspiring posters highlighting the numerous careers which require language skills. Mr McCully, Head of Junior College proudly awarded prizes for the overall winners in Years 8, 9 and 10. The Modern Languages Department has proudly displayed the pupils work in the College.

Heads of The Modern Languages Department, Mrs R Miskelly and Ms C Flynn were particularly impressed with the imagination and effort pupils put into their competition entries.

Laurelhill Pupil to Debate at Stormont

Year 12 Laurelhill Community College pupil Marie Fegan is preparing to take part in an influential debate in the Main Chamber in Stormont on the 23rd October on the impacts of anti-social behaviour, alcohol and drug-taking on the community. Marie and many other representatives of Lisburn’s young adults will be voicing their opinions and offering up ideas on how to tackle these problems within society. Marie, who has aspirations of studying law at university feels that it is important that young people become actively involved in local politics. The meeting in October will allow many young people the opportunity to meet influential ministers and speakers. Marie is hoping to voice her opinions and propose ideas when the day of speeches concludes and the floor is open for discussion. Marie rose to this challenge when local MP Jeffrey Donaldson asked local schools for volunteers earlier on in the year. Since then, Marie has been keenly debating the issue with fellow representatives on a regular basis. Marie is eagerly looking forward to the challenge and hopes that the experience will prove to be an enriching one.


Laurelhill Community College Welcomes
its new 6th Form Students

Laurelhill Community College extended a warm welcome to returning pupils and new pupils into Year 13 this week. Pupils were enthusiastic and keen to begin their study for A Levels in the new state-of-the-art ICT facilities, Sixth Form Centre and Library. At present Laurelhill offers pupils the opportunity to study various GCE A Level courses including History, English Literature, Communication Technology, Applied A Levels in Health and Social Care, Business and Medical Science.

Commenting on this year’s AS and A’Level results, Head of Sixth Year Mr Barkley Campbell said, “It is very rewarding that pupils and staff experienced success after so much endeavour and commitment. The decision to reintroduce “A” Levels into the College since 1998 has proven to be correct giving students the best opportunity to develop personally, socially and academically.”

“Penny-wise” with GCSE Financial Services.

With the”credit-crunch” looming, Laurelhill Community College had the foresight to empower its pupils with the choice of a GCSE in Financial Services in 2006. This empowering GCSE gives pupils the exciting opportunity to learn invaluable money management skills. This innovative GCSE course includes units of study such as budgeting and “shopping around” as an educated consumer for the best financial product available. Financial Services Teacher, Mrs Janine Simpson congratulated all of her pupils on excellent GCSE results and said, “I am absolutely delighted with our GCSE Financial Services results and I am immensely proud of the pupils as their hard work and enthusiasm has paid off.” Particular mention should be made of Demi Scott who achieved an amazing A* GCSE grade and Hollie Doyle who achieved an A grade GCSE. Hollie commended the course and said that it was “brilliant” and had changed the way in which she managed her finances. She also stated that she “appreciated the dedicated teaching and support” from Mrs Simpson. This GCSE is just one example of the College’s enriched and exciting curriculum.

Ross Lightbody- Under 13 Irish Badminton Champion

New Year 8 Laurelhill Community College pupil Ross Lightbody is tipped to set the badminton world alight with his sporting talent. At the tender age of 11, Ross has already been crowned Under 13 Irish Badminton Champion, Under 13 Ulster Badminton Champion and Under 11 European Champion.

Ross travelled to England last week to play against older boys in the under 13 section of the European Badminton Championships. Bravely competing against older boys, Ross managed to get into the final of the doubles matches and the quarter finals of the singles matches. The College is immensely proud of his achievements at this event. Ross will be proudly representing the College later in the academic year in the Champions of Champions Competition. The College looks forward to supporting Ross and celebrating his successes in the future.

 

Laurelhill Praises its Year 9 in a Assembly of Celebration

Laurelhill Community College’s new academic year began on a very positive note when Principal, Dr Maurice Malcomson present Year 9 pupils with Certificates of Achievement during an “Assembly of Celebration”. Head of Year 9 Mr J Ferguson, along with Form Tutors applauded as pupils received their certificates. The new Head of Junior College, Mr M McCully said that recognition of achievement was fundamental to the ethos of the College and that the presentation was a very happy, positive way to begin the College year.

Lyndsey Robinson, Jordan Campbell, Darren McNeice, Katie Davis, Gary Parker, Daniel Irwin, Jack Topping and Cameron Part were awarded certificates for academic progress in Year 8. Heather Magee and Shannen Ervine were awarded certificates for 100% attendance in Year 8. Young star of last year’s College production of “High School Musical” Curtis Cassells was awarded a certificate celebrating his contribution to Music. Daniel Irwin received a certificate praising his contribution to Music, specialising in the drums. Shannen Ervine was awarded a certificate for her contribution to sport within the College. Daniel Brown was awarded a certificate praising his participation in Drama. Joshua Belshaw also received a certificate praising his contribution to Drama but was also awarded a certificate for excellent progress in French.
